MEETING THE TERRORIST CHALLENGE (10.10.06)

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, has announced new measures to tackle the threat of terrorism. In a speech given at Chatham House on 10 October, he highlighted the work that the Treasury has undertaken since the 9/11 attacks to root out terrorist financing. A new Order in Council will give the Treasury the power to stop funds reaching anyone in the UK suspected of planning or engaging with terrorist activities. The Government's forthcoming 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review will examine the resources and support given to the police, security and intelligence services in the fight against terrorism. The Chancellor also called for a renewed drive to promote cultural action against terrorist extremism through supporting civil society projects, encouraging reform and promoting democratic values.

SECURITY SERVICE WORK ON SERIOUS CRIME (05.10.06)

Following the launch of the Serious Organised Crime Agency, the Security Service has now suspended work on the prevention and detection of serious crime. This will enable the Service to focus further resources on international terrorism, the most serious threat to national security facing the United Kingdom.
